Crockpot Cooking: Slow Cooked Dessert Recipes

Warning, this hub contains dessert recipes that are guaranteed to raise your sugar level while satisfying a sweet tooth; so please enter at your own risk. Crockpot Cooking: Slow Cooked Dessert Recipes will ruin a healthy diet if one is not careful. Some of my regular readers are probably thinking; “Whaaaat?,” because I’m usually providing information on fitness, nutrition, supplements, weight loss tips, or something healthy.

Well! If an individual looks at preparing desserts at home verses restaurant takeout; I think one will still find it beneficial because you choose and control the ingredients mixed into the dessert. Needless to say, these dessert recipes cannot be served to a family everyday; however, there may be a special occasion that you would like to enjoy a quick and easy dessert in moderation.

In last week’s hub, Crockpot Cooking: Baking Tips and Techniques I mentioned that the crock pot slow cooker could be used to make desserts.  Crockpots are more advanced than 20 years ago and has such accessories as cooking liners that assist in easier cleaning.  This means that now a sweet syrupy bananas foster can be prepared without having to throw away the stoneware afterwards.  So, sit back relax and explore some Crockpot Cooking: Slow Cooked Dessert Recipes while enjoying the weekend or week ahead.

Crockpot Cooking: Slow Cooked Dessert Recipes

The first is a dessert made with bananas that are mixed together with other ingredients cooked and then set a flame.  It makes for an awesome presentation; however, this same wonderful tasting dish can be prepared for your family without running the risk of burning the house down.

Bananas Foster via the Stove

Syrupy Bananas Foster in a Crockpot

6 firm bananas peeled and cut into quarters

½ cup flaked coconut (optional)

½ tsp. cinnamon

¼ tsp. kosher salt

½ cup dark corn syrup

1/3 cup unsalted butter

1 tsp. lemon zest, grated

3 tbs. lemon juice

¼ cup rum

6 slices of pound cake about 1 to 2 inches thick

1 qt French vanilla ice cream, softened

Whipped cream and a cherry for garnish

Instructions -   Take bananas and coconut if using and place in a 2 to 4 quart crock-pot slow cooker.  In a bowl mix combine the cinnamon, salt, corn syrup, butter, lemon zest, lemon juice, and rum.  Pour over the bananas and coconut (if used) cover, and cook on low for 1 to 2 hours.  Once cooked place a slice of pound cake on a plate, a scoop of ice cream on top, ladle over the syrupy bananas foster, a dap of whipped cream, and a cherry.  And enjoy!

Alternatives - This dessert according to Wikipedia was created in 1951 by Paul Blangé at Brennan's Restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana; named for Richard Foster, a friend of Owen Brennan.  Of course, there are several ways one can make this dessert and it can be made without so many calories through substitution.  For example, leave off the scoop of ice cream and save calories.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake via the Oven

Easy Crockpot Pineapple Upside-down Cake

1 large can of pineapple chunks, natural juice reserved (about 15 oz)

1 package pound cake mix

8 maraschino cherries, halved

½ cup brown sugar

¼ cup butter

A sprig of mint (optional)

Whipped cream (optional)

Instructions - Prepare cake mix according to package directions, using pineapple juice for part of the liquid. Melt butter in a baking pan that has been sprayed with Pam or some other vegetable oil spray. Once melted stir in brown sugar and spread the mixture evenly into the baking pan. Add pineapples and cherries and then pour in cake batter and cover bake pan with aluminum foil. Place on a baking rake within the crock pot slower cooker; cover on high for 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours. Remove immediately after cooking and invert onto a plate and allow cooling down before serving. For fun, decorate with a few mint leaves and daps or whipped cream around the cake.

Alternative – One can alternate and use ringed pineapple instead of chunked; and can also whip up a cake batter from scratch if you prefer to do so. I like to place this cake on a plate large enough that I can decorate the plate with mint leaves and whipped cream instead of the cake. That way everyone has the option to add the extra calories or leave it alone.

What great recipes, MG. Do you think it's possible to gain weight just by reading about such luscious desserts?

I think it is because it's so hard to just read about them and then not want to have some.

So now you're the Crockpot Queen according to Om. We have a lot in common. I have often been called (when coaching recalcitrant clients) the Crackpot Queen. But keep that to yourself please.
