Learn How to Buy Therapeutic Essential Oils will be a recap and review of the importance of purchasing organic, pure, and natural therapeutic essential oils. Therapeutic grade essential oils are high-quality oils and can be viewed as an essential foundation of Aromatherapy. In this economy individuals are looking for bargains, however when it comes to essential oils and aromatherapy this should not be areas that one is attempting to find the cheapest price. Many times just like with most things, if the price is really cheap and sounds too good to be true; it most likely is.

You might be thinking, “Oh Money Glitch, its just oil that smells good what harm can it be to purchase the cheapest brand?” Well the answer is two-fold in that for one these oils are inhaled and or applied to your body and absorbed internally. The second reason is that because only 2 percent of the essential oils sold in America are true therapeutic grade essential oils. The concept that aromatherapy only has to smell good to make you feel good is misleading. This is why many have ran to the health food store to buy the latest aroma only to find that they don’t feel any improvement and or feel worst in some cases.

And perhaps now you think aromatherapy essential oils is just a lot of hype. Well the truth is you most likely purchased the wrong oil. If you are using aromatherapy beyond the fact that it smells good and want to truly assist your body in detoxing and or healing then it is very important to learn how to buy therapeutic essential oils.

Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oils: What are they?

There are amazing health potential benefits to using high quality medicinal aromatherapy. These essential oils can provide you with a sense of well-being, improve your health, make you feel more alive, and even feel younger. That is provided that you are using therapeutic essential oils and not the other 98% of essential oils that are produced for perfume, cosmetic, or food industries.

There is a scientific method called gas chromatography purity testing that can help to determine the overall purity of an essential oil. I’m not going to pretend that I understand this testing however my research revealed that this test, along with proper steam distillation, and no additives is what assists in determining if a essential oil product is of therapeutic grade. You can read more about what makes an essential oil a therapeutic grade on the hub titled, Therapeutic Essential Oils and Healing.

Health Dangers of Adulterated Oils

True therapeutic essential oils are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-infectious, anti-microbial, anti-septic, anti-tumoral, anti-viral, and stimulates the immune-system. Hence, the very important reason why you want to make sure your oils were not made with any pollutants. True essential oils are chemically complex however they don’t disturb the body’s natural balance or homeostasis. One must learn to research and read the labels of essential oil products in order to identify the best grade of oil. You can find more information about reading labels on the hub titled, Therapeutic Essential Oils and Healing Naturally.

Aromatherapy oils made from natural substances tend to go only where they are needed to help restore the body’s natural balance. Because the oils are natural the identical oil may be used a week later and have a totally different effect on the individual’s body depending on his or her needs at the moment of each application. Synthetic chemicals or cheaper brands of essential oils often interrupt the body’s homeostasis, because the chemical’s make up is forcing a foreign matter rather than what the body needs. Natural healing requires products that are perceived as being a natural substance that the body can use.

More about Adulterated Oils

It is important to understand that purchasing adulterated (contaminated or pollutants) oils are harmful and can do more harm than good. Presently in America lavandin (lavandula x hybrida) is being sold as lavender (lavandula angustifolia) the true essential oil product. Lavandin is a hybrid that is cut with synthetic linalyl acetate to improve the fragrance. So if your lavender burns when you use it almost guaranteed a 100 percent that you have lavandin and not a true lavender product.

Sadly production of true lavender oil in France alone has dropped from 87 tons in 1967 to only 12 tons in 1998; however demand for the product is up over 100 percent. So how is this possible – lavandin. Again, a true lavender product should have the plant name (lavandula angustifolia) if it does not I would not use it as an aromatherapy product.

Frankincense resin is very costly, between $30,000 to $35,000 a ton; so there are a lot of products that are laden with gum resins, alcohol, and other pollutants. Another great essential oil product that is often not sold in its purest form is rose oil.  Articles that I’ve read stated that it takes, “5,000 pounds of rose petals to produce 1 pound of rose oil.” Needless to say, I hope this information helps you to avoid the urge to purchase less quality products simply because they cost less. One’s body and or health could suffer the consequences.

What to Buy First?

Now that you have learned how to buy therapeutic essential oils I’m sure you are excited and want to know what to buy first that will work on healing an issue or providing you with a sense of well being. If you have special needs then I would suggest that you consult with a specialized aromatherapist , herbalist, or someone experienced with alternative medicine.

If you are interested in learning more about aromatherapy by experimenting with a few products, I would suggest that you start with the NAHA’s top l0 list. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy named what they consider to be the top 10 therapeutic essential oils. And they are: ylang ylang, geranium, lavender, lemon, clary sage, roman chamomile, rosemary, tea tree, peppermint, and eucalyptus. All of which are presented on this hub.

Thank you for the essential oil cautions...did not realize that 98% was not 'therapeutic'. That means I probably have several that are not truly therapeutic. Thanks for sharing your detailed information.
